Are Salt Pools Chlorine Free?

One of the biggest misconceptions pool owners have about salt water pools is that they are free of chlorine. Salt CANNOT sanitize a pool as is sometimes believed. In fact, salt is converted to chlorine through electrolysis process. The salt cell (which is the actual chlorine generator) is used to produce hypochlorous acid (HClO) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), which are the sanitizing agents already commonly used in swimming pools. So, saltwater pool is not actually chlorine-free; it simply utilizes a chlorine generator instead of direct addition of chlorine.

Then why should I have a Salt Generator Installed?

A very good question and the best answer. Salt chlorinator makes chlorine the same way a chlorine factory does. The difference is that it is manufactured in your pool and it is 100% pure, whereas chlorine is approximately 12.5% pure. The main problem is not chlorine, it’s the by-products that come with chlorine when you buy it from the shop.

“It’s a good decision to move to a Salt Chlorinated Pool”.

You get “Chlorine” from a Salt generator but in its natural in form of gas and free from products that are harmful and can cause CANCER over a period of time in some cases.

End of the day the sad truth is “Chlorine” is the best sanitizer when it comes to kill the bacteria, however, again a UV added can do much to it by killing the chloramines and reducing the usage of chlorine significantly.
